about us

who we are

We are based in Albuquerque, New Mexico and are a program of America’s Children (formerly Children of The Americas), a tax exempt 501 (c)(3) organization that was founded in 1974 in Santa Teresita Orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico.   We are 100% volunteers who care about the people in our community and in our world.

how we started

help {=} hope started out as friends getting together for dinner a couple times a month to talk over what was happening in the world and in our lives. After just a few meals we realized it wasn’t enough to just talk about problems, we wanted to be doing something about them.

For our first project, we partnered with our friends at America’s Children and collected enough school supplies to fill 40 backpacks.  The only problem was, we didn’t know any kids at all… let alone kids that needed school supplies.

We started asking around and within 2 weeks from the time we started collecting supplies, all our backpacks were gone!  Including two we handed over to students at 6:30am on the first day of school.

Over the remainder of 2009, we made over 4,000 Christmas cards sent to soldiers stationed overseas, sewed bags that were filled with small gifts and given out at a local battered women’s shelter for Mother’s Day,  partnered up with Upper Room, Elk Grove, CA to give out 14 food boxes to families over the Thanksgiving break, gave 2 trash bags full of fabric to a group that makes blankets for an emergency shelter, and through it all… had a great time together!

 what we do

we are involved in a wide variety of projects during the year, but the two biggest are a School Supply Drive and Thanksgiving Day Food Drive.  We accept donations of school supplies and gift cards to grocery, office supply and retail stores such as Target and Wal-Mart, all year round.

Got UR Back School Supply Drive –

We provide backpacks full of school supplies to needy kids in New Mexico. Each pack contains the following items and averages $25.

Pencils,  Pens, ruler, eraser, colored pencils, pencil sharpener, glue or glue sticks, 2 spiral notebooks, binder, pack of loose leaf paper, markers, crayons, coloring book, markers, scissors, small solar calculator, toy, and personal hygiene item such as toothbrush or comb

Thanksgiving Food Boxes –

Our goal is to enable families to have enough food to cover the long Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend when children are out of school and without the cafeteria for meals.

Each box contains enough food to feed a family of four and costs about $35.  It contains items such as the following:

Turkey, dressing, potatoes, vegetables, coffee or tea, yams, olives, green beans, rice, red chile, beans, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce and pie.
